Fried Pickle Ingredients

  • Egg – Egg will bind the flour and seasoning to the pickles.
  • Milk – The milk is used to create your batter – my preference is whole milk for the richness in flavor.
  • All Purpose Flour, Make sure to divide this as per the recipe; you will use some for the wet mix and some for the dry.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Amps up the umami goodness.
  • All Purpose Seasoning – I like Lawry’s, Seasoned Salt but choose one that speaks to you!
  • Oil – I use olive oil for frying but you could use any neutral oil.
  • Pickles – Get really big ones, seriously, like deli size, sliced. And if you’re feeling ambitious, use our refrigerator pickle recipe to make your own!
  • Ranch dressing– For dipping. Blue cheese dressing is good too!

What type of pickles for fried pickles?

Any type of pickles will work fine. Spears, halves, slices, and chips – as pictured here! My personal favorites are pickle chips or slices because they are the perfect size for dipping in ranch dressing. Mmmmm.

Yes, you can make them without eggs. Make sure you dry the pickle slices really well so that the batter will stick. The batter may not stick quite as well.

Yes, you can prepare them with pancake batter or a pre-made mix, like Bisquick. Interestingly, the first record of a fried pickle recipe (in 1962) used pancake batter!

When prepared with pancake batter they will have a more bread-like texture to them.

Nutrition

Are fried pickles gluten free?

Pickles are gluten free (check the label if buying), but fried pickles usually are made with wheat flour. However, you could try this recipe with some tapioca flour or arrowroot flour to make it gluten free!

Just substitute for the wheat flour, and you will get a more tempura like batter.

Are fried pickles vegan?

They can be vegan, although my recipe has eggs and milk. You could use an egg substitute for the egg and milk to get the β€œstickiness” you need for the wet batter. Dry the pickle slices well before starting the dipping process.

Are fried pickles healthy?

They are not β€œhealthy,” per se, as they are deep fried. However, you will be enjoying them as a snack, not an entree, so your serving size will be limited.

Frequently asked questions

What do fried pickles taste like?

Fried pickles are crunchy on the outside and soft and sour and salty on the inside. They taste like a little salty slice of heaven.

OK, the taste can depend on the type of pickle you use. I like a nice, sour dill, but some people fry up bread-and-butter pickles or garlic dills. Experiment to see what you love!

If you don’t love ranch, try them with a chunky blue cheese dip!

Tools we love

  • Calphalon everyday pan– This is a 12β€³ two handled pan that you will use pretty much every day. Which, of course is why it’s called an everyday pan. I have this one and the Le Creuset version. I use a whole lot of pots and pans in my line of work (apologies to my husband, the dishwasher!) and these are by far my most frequently used pans.
  • End grain cutting board– This is my absolute favorite cutting board and the one that I get the most compliments on. And p.s. I have a lot of cutting boards. It really is absolutely stunning, and knows how to take a beating. We use it every single day!
  • Santuko knife– My favorite knife for cutting vegetables! This knife is the perfect size and shape, handles great, and is super reasonably priced. Also, I just love that it’s fun and colorful!
